Part of that is out of necessity because karuta matches are not easy to parse and we need our peanut gallery to explain what's going on, and we also need compelling opponents to challenge our main cast.Still the manga/show does a great job of fleshing out the side characters and keeping them relevant so that they can be brought back into the main story in a way that's natural, and at the same time adding little nuggets of characterization to make them feel real. Throughout its run, Chihayafuru has built up a very impressive secondary and tertiary cast. One of my favorite things about this show is how it utilizes its characters. I could go on forever.I love that in the midst of all that, there are still new people added to the mix and I don't think I'm alone in already falling for Inakuma. I love that we get to see Tsuboguchi's team there to cheer him on (with Sasa putting curses on his opponents lmao). I love how we're getting to know Sakurazawa-sensei better. I love Sudo and his mind games. I love Kitano-sensei and his running commentary (seasoned with some good old rivalry!).

I like how her husband supports her and how she wants to keep playing karuta for herself. She came from a karuta family and spent most of her time as a child in karuta society halls. If Chihaya's dream about playing Shinobu in costumes came true, that would be hilarious.Inokuma's backstory is interesting. Daddy Bear is probably Chihaya's one true love other than karuta (sorry Taichi and Arata). There was a lot of exciting karuta action and great character moments, so quintessential Chihayafuru for me.When Chihaya started beaming when she saw Inokuma's son with the Daddy Bear T-shirt, I laughed. This is gonna be good.I think this episode is my favorite episode so far.

Tsuboguchi was such a bro in this episode though. Too bad that Harada-sensei lost against Murao though, I was hoping for a Shiranami Society sweep. It's a nice reminder that while Arata is great, he isn't invincible. That scene Sakurazawa had with Rion about how when fast players become slower they get frustrated and quit was really sad.Good on Tsuboguchi for winning against Arata. Inokuma asking Sakurazwa to help her practice might spark Sakurazawa's return to playing karuta instead of just coaching which would be cool. Inokuma is a cool character and I hope we get to see more of her.

Is Taichi's new skills and style going to be enough to beat Chihaya? I love both characters so much, so I'm not sure who I want to win. Taichi and Chihaya have never played each other in a competition before, so I'm very curious to see how this is going to turn out. Watching Taichi's karuta going forward is going to be interesting. We have a Taichi and Chihaya final, which I'm sure will be thrilling. I'm glad that Taichi is figuring out what works for him and doesn't feel obligated to play the way he's been taught. Interesting to note that maybe defensive karuta might be a better fit for Taichi than offensive karuta.

I think it would ramp up the competitive and romantic tension through the roof.If Chihaya wins, I think the story would just be spinning its wheels. He's even pretty good." A Taichi win would light a fire under Arata. Right now, it seems to me he just looks at Taichi like "oh cool, my childhood friend still plays Karuta. Even if she doesn't end up with him in the end (and God help whatever hospital I burn down in the event she doesn't), she needs to be able to look at him as more than just her Karuta friend. For Arata, he'd see Taichi as a rival. He's always felt like he's not good enough and it would signal that he's not only good at Karuta, but also good enough for Chihaya. For Chihaya, she'd start seeing him less like a teammate and somebody she supports, and more as somebody she admires, possibly even in the same vein she does with Arata now.
